In this topical collection, we present nine papers covering a wide spectrum of topics, with three articles illustrating the scope, contexts, concepts, and challenges of forest adaptation and restoration in general, on a transcontinental or global scale (Spathelf et al. <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/s13595-018-0736-4\">2018<\/a>, Stanturf et al. <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/s13595-019-0833-z\">2019<\/a>, Jandl et al. <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/s13595-019-0827-x\">2019<\/a>). Another six papers discuss aspects of adaptation and restoration in different regions of the world (Europe: Chakraborty et al. <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/s13595-019-0883-2\">2019<\/a>, Paul et al. <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/s13595-018-0793-8\">2019<\/a>, Jandl et al. <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/s13595-018-0760-4\">2018<\/a>; Asia: Hai et al. <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/s13595-020-0921-0\">2020<\/a>, and Australia: Harper et al. <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/s13595-019-0880-5\">2019<\/a>). Most of these papers result from collaborations in the global networks on Forest adaptation and restoration under global change, and the following one on Transforming forest landscapes for future climate and human well-being.
