We strongly encourage the authors of research papers to provide access to their data under the form of open data sets, together with all required metadata. We discourage the uploading of datasets as supplementary material files that are published online in the journal\u2019s platform under restricted access and involve the transfer of copyrights to the publisher.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Data must be Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR) and these principles put specific emphasis on enhancing the ability of machines to automatically find and use the data, in addition to supporting its reuse by individuals (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/sdata201618\">https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/sdata201618<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>The FAIR guiding principles:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><u>To be Findable:<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Datasets are assigned a persistent <strong>Digital Object Identifier<\/strong> (DOI)<\/li>\n<li>Datasets are described with rich <strong>metadata<\/strong>: please provide a separate file that explains what all of the variables are.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dataset citation<\/strong> is included in the data availability statement and in the reference list of the manuscript. See our templates for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.springer.com\/cda\/content\/document\/cda_downloaddocument\/Template_Manuscript.DOCX?SGWID=0-0-45-1617460-p174076259\">manuscript<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.springer.com\/cda\/content\/document\/cda_downloaddocument\/Template_Title-page.DOCX?SGWID=0-0-45-1617461-p174076259\">title page<\/a> for guidance. Accessed 28 March 2017.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>To be Accessible:<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Datasets are <strong>openly<\/strong> and <strong>freely<\/strong> retrievable by their identifier (DOI);<\/li>\n<li>Datasets are hosted by a <strong>stable and recognised open repository<\/strong> (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.re3data.org\/\">https:\/\/www.re3data.org\/<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/sdata\/policies\/repositories\">https:\/\/www.nature.com\/sdata\/policies\/repositories<\/a>);<\/li>\n<li>Datasets should be submitted to <strong>discipline-specific<\/strong> repositories whenever possible, or to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/sdata\/data-policies\/repositories#general\">generalist or institutional repositories <\/a>if no suitable community resource is available.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>To be Interoperable:<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Datasets are <strong>logically<\/strong> and <strong>consistently<\/strong> formatted: Please <strong>avoid using proprietary formats<\/strong> to ensure that the files will be accessible to every user. For instance, excel spreadsheets should be converted to a plain text format (.csv or .txt);<\/li>\n<li>Datasets should be described using a <strong>standard vocabulary<\/strong> (where available): Common vocabularies consist of lists of standardised terms that cover a broad spectrum of disciplines of relevance to your research topic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>To be Reusable:<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Metadata file should include at least (1) <strong>the exact variable name<\/strong> as in the data file, (2) the <strong>measurement units,<\/strong> (3) a longer explanation of what the <strong>variable means<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li>Datasets are released with a clear and accessible <strong>data usage license<\/strong>, preferentially CC-BY 4.0 (the dataset can be shared and adapted if credits are attributed to the data providers);<\/li>\n<li>Datasets are associated with <strong>detailed provenance;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Datasets should include details (version, accessibility) of any <strong>software<\/strong> that is required to <strong>view the data<\/strong> described or to <strong>replicate the analysis<\/strong>. If the software was encoded by the authors, please <strong>provide the source code<\/strong> together with your dataset.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>Organizing datasets in spreadsheets: <\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">To increase the accessibility and reusability of spreadsheet data, please follow the practical recommendations listed below (for more information see: W. Broman &amp; Kara H. Woo (2018), <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1080\/00031305.2017.1375989\">https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1080\/00031305.2017.1375989<\/a>)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Spreadsheets should be preferentially submitted in <strong>CSV <\/strong>or <strong>TAB<\/strong> format<\/li>\n<li>Organize your spreadsheet data as a <strong>single big rectangle<\/strong> with rows corresponding to subjects and columns corresponding to variables;<\/li>\n<li>Use <strong>consistent terms<\/strong> and<strong> codes<\/strong> for nominal variables and variable names.
