We are very concerned by the international debate on the contribution of sustainable forest management to climate change mitigation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span title=\"Par la pr\u00e9sente, nous souhaitons porter \u00e0 votre connaissance nos critiques nombreuses, profondes et convergentes sur le contenu de l\u2019article publi\u00e9 r\u00e9cemment dans Science par Naudts et al.\">Here we wish to inform the research community about our <\/span><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\"><span title=\"Par la pr\u00e9sente, nous souhaitons porter \u00e0 votre connaissance nos critiques nombreuses, profondes et convergentes sur le contenu de l\u2019article publi\u00e9 r\u00e9cemment dans Science par Naudts et al.\">deep and converging criticism of the message delivered by the paper recently published in Science (Naudts et al.<\/span><span title=\"(2016) sous le titre \u00ab Europe\u2019s forest management did not mitigate climate warming \u00bb, ainsi que sur la tactique de communication qui a accompagn\u00e9 sa sortie.\">(2016) under the title &#8220;Europe&#8217;s forest management did not mitigate climate warming&#8221;. We also disagree with the communication in a number of media\u00a0 that accompanied this publication. <\/span><span title=\"L\u2019article cherche \u00e0 montrer que, depuis 250 ans, la gestion des for\u00eats europ\u00e9ennes a accumul\u00e9 une importante dette-carbone et induit un r\u00e9chauffement estival par modification de l\u2019albedo li\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019extension des r\u00e9sineux ;\">The paper aims at showing that, over 250 years, the management of European forests has accumulated a significant carbon debt and induced a summer warming by changing the albedo due to the spread of conifers; <\/span><span title=\"il conclut que la politique d\u2019att\u00e9nuation du changement climatique par le reboisement et la gestion foresti\u00e8re risque l\u2019\u00e9chec. \">it concluded that the policy of mitigation of climate change through reforestation and forest management risks failure.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span title=\"L\u2019argumentation que nous exposons ci-dessous est tir\u00e9e d\u2019une analyse de l\u2019article lui-m\u00eame ;\">The argument that we present below is drawn from an analysis of the paper itself; <\/span><span title=\"elle exploite en outre les mat\u00e9riaux suppl\u00e9mentaires disponibles en ligne sur le site de la revue Science, ainsi que dans 3 articles sign\u00e9s pr\u00e9c\u00e9demment par le m\u00eame groupe d\u2019auteurs, qui donnent plus de pr\u00e9cisions sur la recherche entreprise. \">it also uses additional materials available online on the journal Science&#8217;s website, as well as three papers signed previously by the same group of authors, which provide more details about the research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span title=\"Nos critiques portent sur les points suivants : \">Our concerns relate to the following main issues:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span title=\"(1) l\u2019article conclut une s\u00e9rie de publications relatant un \u00e9chafaudage m\u00e9thodologique complexe pour restituer l\u2019\u00e9volution des for\u00eats europ\u00e9ennes depuis 1600 ;\">(1) The paper concludes a series of publications describing a complex methodological scaffolding to reconstruct the time-course of European forests since 1600; <\/span><span title=\"la m\u00e9thode repose sur une s\u00e9rie d\u2019hypoth\u00e8ses tr\u00e8s fortes, tr\u00e8s impactantes pour les r\u00e9sultats, contestables mais n\u00e9anmoins non discut\u00e9es dans Science \">the method is based on a series of very strong assumptions, questionable and very impactful for the\u00a0 results, but nevertheless not discussed in the Science paper.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span title=\"(2) les modifications apport\u00e9es au mod\u00e8le Orchid\u00e9e sont expos\u00e9es dans la revue Geosci.\">(2) Changes to the model &#8220;Orchid\u00e9e&#8221; are described in Naudts et al (2015)<\/span> <span title=\";\">; <\/span><span title=\"en d\u00e9pit des 30 pages de l\u2019article, il est tr\u00e8s difficile de savoir si difficult to grasp whether the model is adapted to forest policy applications using fine resolution spatial variations; <\/span><span title=\"tout en s'appuyant sur des faits historiques pertinents nature of the historical reconstruction is discussed in detail in McGrath et al (2015)\u00a0 which outlines the need of further developing a multidisciplinary approach to actually support the hypotheses put forward in the paper.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span title=\"(3) l\u2019article de Science reprend les r\u00e9sultats de ces articles pr\u00e9c\u00e9dents, sans en reprendre les repeating the\u00a0 precautions and restrictions imposed by the large uncertainties of the approach that were clearly outlined in McGrath et et al (2015) and in Naudts et al (2015).<br class=\"hps\">European countries<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">over the<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">two<\/span> last <span class=\"hps\">centuries<\/span>, <span class=\"hps\">the authors&#8217; conclusion<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">is strongly<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">counter<\/span><span class=\"atn\">&#8211;<\/span>intuitive; it <span class=\"hps\">should first<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">feed<\/span> <span class=\"hps\"> a debate<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">without trying to<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">rush<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">towards practical conclusions<\/span>. <span class=\"hps\"> For the record<\/span>, we remind <span class=\"hps\">that such a discussion<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">was developed after Michel Becker and his team at Inra Nancy advocated the occurrence of a\u00a0<\/span> significant <span class=\"hps\">increase in forest productivity<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">during the twentieth<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">century.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><span title=\"cours du XX\u00e8me si\u00e8cle \"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\"><span title=\"(5) id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\"><span title=\"(5) concernant les applications \u00e0 la d\u00e9cision qui sont vis\u00e9es, implicitement dans l'article mais explicitement dans les interviews donn\u00e9es \u00e0 la presse g\u00e9n\u00e9raliste, le caract\u00e8re d\u00e9cal\u00e9 de la recherche conduite ne semble pas conscient chez les auteurs : (i) l'article\"><span class=\"hps\">applications<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">for<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">decision making; interviews<\/span><span class=\"hps\"> given<\/span> <span class=\"hps\"> to<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the general press made these applications very explicit. <\/span><span class=\"hps\">The authors\u00a0 do not seem fully aware that the <\/span><span class=\"hps\">research they conducted<\/span> is somehow highly speculative: <span class=\"hps atn\">(<\/span>i) the paper <span class=\"hps\">deals<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">with the past changes in forests,<\/span> <span class=\"hps\"> while<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">what is important for <\/span><span class=\"hps\">decision-making\u00a0 today<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">is<\/span> <span class=\"hps\"> only<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the future of forests<\/span>, start<span class=\"hps\">ing from<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">their current status and<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">under historically<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">unprecedented conditions<\/span><span class=\"\">;<\/span> <span class=\"hps atn\"> (<\/span><span class=\"\">ii) the paper<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">discusses<\/span> <span class=\"hps\"> forest management<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">by insulating the<\/span> <span class=\"hps\"> soil<\/span><span class=\"atn\">&#8211;<\/span><span class=\"\">forest<\/span><span class=\"\">-atmosphere system<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">therefore<\/span> <span class=\"hps\"> without taking into account<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the environmental impacts<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of the use of<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">forest carbon<\/span> <span class=\"hps\"> compared<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">to <\/span><\/span><\/span><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\"><span title=\"(5) concernant les applications \u00e0 la d\u00e9cision qui sont vis\u00e9es, implicitement dans l'article mais explicitement dans les interviews donn\u00e9es \u00e0 la presse g\u00e9n\u00e9raliste, le caract\u00e8re d\u00e9cal\u00e9 de la recherche conduite ne semble pas conscient chez les auteurs : (i) title=\"(ii) l\u2019article traite de la gestion foresti\u00e8re en isolant le syst\u00e8me sol-for\u00eat-atmosph\u00e8re et donc sans prendre en consid\u00e9ration les impacts environnementaux compar\u00e9s de l\u2019usage du carbone forestier par rapport \u00e0 des mat\u00e9riaux\/sources d\u2019\u00e9nergie alternatifs \"><br \/>\n<\/span><span title=\"(6) toujours vis-\u00e0-vis des applications, la d\u00e9cision sur le choix des esp\u00e8ces et, plus largement, le choix des modes de gestion (y compris la non-gestion) n\u00e9cessite une \u00e9valuation int\u00e9gr\u00e9e qui class=\"hps\">(very<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">important<\/span> <span class=\"hps alt-edited\">for climate change<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">mitigation<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">but not<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">taken into account at all in the paper<\/span>) <span class=\"hps\">and many other<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">decision criteria<\/span> <span class=\"hps atn\">(<\/span><span class=\"\">including industrial<\/span> <span class=\"hps alt-edited\"> abilities and<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">specific<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">efficiencies<\/span> <span class=\"hps alt-edited\">of softwood<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and hardwood<\/span>, <span class=\"hps alt-edited\">the lifespan<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of their products<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">&#8230;<\/span><span class=\"\">)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span title=\"(7) enfin, la m\u00e9thode consistant \u00e0 organiser une \u00e9bullition m\u00e9diatique autour de class=\"hps\">advance<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the social debate<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">on new<\/span> <span class=\"hps atn\"> post-<\/span>COP21 <span class=\"hps\">modes of production.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span title=\"Nos critiques rejoignent celles exprim\u00e9es sur le site Research Gate par un groupe de chercheurs allemands appartenant \u00e0 trois class=\"hps\">brought into play<\/span> <span class=\"hps\"> by the choice of<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">forest<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">management strategies for<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">global challenges<\/span> <span class=\"hps alt-edited\">in the coming decades<\/span>, <span class=\"hps\">we affirm the<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">need for multidisciplinary<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">integrated studies and research<\/span><span class=\"\">, restoring<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">articulating<\/span> <span class=\"hps\"> all the dimensions<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of the phenomena.<\/span> <span class=\"hps\"> Several<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">are ongoing and<\/span> <span class=\"hps
